English is not my main language so this was a significant and funny “A-ha!” moment for me.
It’s because the pea is stored in the nuts.

They’re not nuts that resemble peas, they’re peas that resemble nuts.
Nutpeas.
They are more “pea” than “nut”, though. They are a legume.
Really, it should be called a peapea. Because there are usually two of them together.
Well, pineapple aren’t apples and starfishes aren’t even fish, so…
Pen. Pineapple. Apple. Pen.

Meanwhile in Spanish we got rid of the apple part and simply call them “Piñas”.
By that logic pea should be called peapeapeapeapeapeapea
There’s a type of pea which is called “Kiechererbse” in German. “Erbse” is the German word for pea. And “Kiecher” is the old German word for pea.
Ok, so since pea in Old English is pise, should it be peapisepisepisepisepisepise or peapeapeapeapeapeapise? peapeapeapisepisepisepise?

I think they’re actually legumes, not nuts.
3rd rock from the sun did a whole episode on this, starring the woman who played Roseannes sister as Dick’s new love interest.
25 years later, and I still pronounce legume the way they did in that episode as I recite this fact.
If you can find some that are not roasted, this actually becomes quite obvious. They do taste a lot like peas.
Get an uncooked one and eat it. It tastes like peas.
English is my 1st language and I didn’t realize this until you just pointed it out.
