It can be done, in novels at least, and there are some authors who not only do it well, but it’s just their style. Neal Asher is particularly good at this; I just think it wasn’t JRRT’s strength as writer.

Depending on the rules, exactly does this magic conserve mass? Uranium would get bigger, cotton candy would shrink to a flake? All of the air in the world weighs 5.5 quadrillion tons. A ton of gold is 16.5 cubic inches, or 270 cm³ - so a block about the length of your foot plus a bit per side 5.5 quadrillion of those - a 1,487 cubic km block.

I’d choose to shape it into a giant pyramid, which would minimize how much it sinks into the crust, and look cool AF for the 130-odd seconds it takes everyone to asphyxiate because we’re staring at a giant gold pyramid made from the matter that used to be the atmosphere.

My dislike for MacOS started with this. I had a WordPerfect document, and WordPerfect, but it wouldn’t let me open it because it insisted that it wasn’t a WordPerfect document. And despite the fact that I could open it in WordPerfect on other computers.

It’s always been this “I know better than you, idiot” mentality that drove me away. I went back, briefly, when businesses started letting employees request MacBooks instead of Windows - given those two options, OSX is preferable. Plus, it was Darwin by then, and the important UI - the shell - was essentially POSIX.

I well always resent MacOS having the temerity to think it knew better than me, especially in cases when it was wrong but you just could not force it to do something.

How will this affect me?

Out of curiosity, what made Endeavor hard? After distro hopping since the mid-90s, I had been happily running bare Arch for the past couple, with Artix on one laptop; I got a new desktop and installed Endeavor on it, and it’s been great. I mean, it’s Arch, it just wasn’t as fussy to install, but I don’t really notice a difference.

Of course, I’m not running a desktop; just herbstluftwm, and that smooths out a lot of the differences, but there’s far less difference between raw-dog Arch and EndeavorOS than between Arch and Artix.

My least favorite book of the three.

Between 12 and about 24, I read the entire quad every summer. Religiously. I always dreaded coming to The Two Towers; it felt like such a slog, and I don’t think jumping between parallel story lines was Tolkien’s forté. Return of the King got better as everyone (well, except the Ring Bearer) started gathering together again and there were fewer threads.

I’ve never heard of Porkbun, but it doesn’t sound like a caddy issue. Let’s Encrypt requires being able to resolve the DNS name you’re requesting a cert for, and to be able to connect to your web service and fetch a secret to prove you own the domain. If porkbun does something like punch a hole in your LAN firewall and let in http traffic, then porkbun is the problem. Not Caddy.

Yeah, I’ve not had issues accessing my instance with a VPN. But it’s the world we live in. I had a vigorous discussion with someone (it’s in my history), vigorous because I replied to a post aggressively, about the poster blocking VPN clients on their self-hosted blog. Someone quite rightly pointed out that botnets, hackers, and spammers are heavy users of VPNs, and sometimes it’s just easier for a hobby admin to block VPN exit nodes. I’ve come to terms with it; there’s nothing online I need to read so badly that I’m going to compromise my own security for their convenience.

As for privacy, you’re absolutely right. Privacy? In a public forum? A federated public forum?? Pick an instance that doesn’t require an email address to register, or use a throw-away email.

But to answer OP’s question: Reddit is owned by a single group of people with complete admin control over the site. Lemmy has many diverse site owners and admins; there is no Spez.

And for that cost, you could just buy a new bike.

Are you sure that anima you ascribe to “knackered” isn’t coming from the adjective? “Fucking exhausted!” sounds, to my ear, just a full of feeling. Whereas, “I’m knackered” sounds just as lifeless as “I’m exhausted.” I wonder if you’re mis-attributing the vigor from “fucking,” which is, indeed, a potent word.

Cheese. Until I lived in Europe and discovered there was more than American and cheddar.

Shit. That’s exactly my list.

• I didn’t even watch GoT long enough to see Emilia Clark in the buff. But, then, I’d read the first two books and absolutely loathed them, and didn’t find the TV series improved the story much.
• I liked the first season of Lost, but the second felt like the writers were like, “oh shit… we got a second season? Shitshitshit…” Like they were just making it up as they went, and the writing and plot was just… bad.
• I didn’t watch BCS because I didn’t like
• Breaking Bad. I mean, I like scenes from BB, but the show itself suffered (for me) from this tendency in the past decade to base entire shows on tense anxiety. Boardwalk Empires was another that used this mechanism, as did
• Peaky Blinders. Great writing. Great acting. But it’s just constant tension, and it’s simply not fun.

It’s like directors got ahold of this one technique and just beat it into every fucking show in the past decade. It’s tired, overused, and you’ll notice it’s a common trait of many of the shows you and agree on. You have to have tension, but I didn’t need every god damned minute to be wondering if someone’s going to get their throat graphically slashed with a straight-edge.

I had a Honda Nighthawk 650 once. The perfect bike, for me, if a little underpowered. But it was comfortable to ride, not too heavy, and looked good.

But it always had electrical problems, and I could never figure them out myself. It would just sporadically have a phase where the starter wouldn’t turn over. I had it in the shop off and on for about 6 years, and finally gave up on it. Never replaced it, didn’t keep up my license, and haven’t ridden in years.

If I ever do take up riding again (which will be an epic fight with the wife who’s mom was a nurse, and is dead set against me riding motorcycles), I want something in that form factor again. I keep looking at Ducatis.

Anyway, electrical issues are the worst.

It was a PITA to change the battery in my 2012 Volvo, and I dread the battery change in the 2016 BMW. I can’t imagine doing anything more complex than that.

I love those old engines I see at the state fair, where the fuel is literally in an open pan on the top, sloshing around. They look like something you could put together yourself with enough effort, but the trade-off is efficiency.

I’d be happy with a fully solid-state car. I’m not a mechanic, or mechanically inclined, so I have no romantic attachment to gas guzzlers.

Or… a less hot version of me? Like, her standards are lower than I expected?
