detective Isaac Hanson, who found Backeberg, said he was able to locate her through her sister’s Ancestry.com account.
“That was pretty key in locating death records, census reports, all kinds of data,” Hanson told the news station, adding: “Ultimately, we came up with an address
I hate that about those genealogy sites: Someone else can give up your privacy for you. I found myself on one with a whole bunch of private info because some relative thought it was cool to put the whole family out there. They included kids, everyone’s birthdays, maiden names, addresses, the whole shebang. All completely public for anyone to search for, without asking anyone if it was okay with them.
I was gonna say something but then I thought about it and realized how fucked up this is. The women just wanted to be left alone.
Shit like this is why I hate when people take pictures of me with their phones. I go out of my way to protect my privacy and block trackers on my device much as I can.
Meanwhile regular, everyday people are voluntarily uploading my photo to Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, or any other number of random, sketchy websites that I have no control over, as they scan my face to add to their database of where I’ve been and what I’m doing.
To be fair, most of the data they are based on are completely public too, like church or government records of births and deaths and similar events.
“Further investigation has revealed that Ms Backeberg’s disappearance was by her own choice and not the result of any criminal activity or foul play,” the sheriff’s office said.
Around the time of her disappearance, Backeberg had filed a criminal complaint against her husband, alleging that he beat her and threatened to kill her, the BBC reports, citing the Wisconsin Missing Persons Advocacy non-profit group.

How to tell people you were born after 2000 without telling them you were born after 2000.
What do you expect the cops could even do in the 60’s to help the woman? Press charges or arrest the husband? Oh wait the first comprehensive domestic abuse laws weren’t even made until the 1970’s.
Ok well I assume you would then want the cops to take her to a battered women clinic? Oh wait that wasn’t a thing either at that time either!
Have the cops advise her to get a divorce? Ha, only gays, whores and hobos didn’t marry for life back then.
Cops wouldn’t have even investigated the abuse part of the complaint, they wouldve investigated the threats of murder that were made but its not like they could obtain any physical evidence like text message transcripts or emails or phone logs. They wouldve gone to the house, asked the hisband if he threatened to kill his wife and he would say no and that would be the end of it.
I apologize if im off in my assumption you are under 25y/o but the context of your comment jumping to the cop’s incompetence throws enough flags to assume you didn’t experience much of what the world was like before the internet.
The real take away from this article should be the absolute balls on this woman for taking action into her own hands and never turning back. I respect the fuck out of this woman.
Yeah you are wrong. And your long lecture seems to miss the point.
Of course shit was aweful then. The woman took care of herself, because the cops, and society in general didn’t give a fuck then and barely do now.
I wasn’t even pointing fingers at those cops back then, I was pointing out the absurdity of the current detective/investigator/whatever he is when he so flippantly dismissed the whole ordeal as…
“I think she just was removed and, you know, moved on from things and kind of did her own thing and led her life … She sounded happy. Confident in her decision, no regrets,” Hanson added.”
How fairytale.

Yeah like that
Her two children are a loose end not addressed by this article.
we live in a society where men abandon their families every day and nobody blinks, because it’s all part of the plan. But when a woman does the same thing, everybody looses their minds!
Agreed on both parts.
I’m glad she escaped, and I hope the kids did too, whether with her or grandparents or through some other mechanism.
While there is certainly a double standard, the reason it is allowed is because women allow it. There should be little to no instances of women dating or marrying a man that abandoned his kids. The fact that women allow it and will fight over a man with 2 other baby mamas is both disgusting and baffling.
