Multiple companies that used to offer local rstp streaming have summarily removed support in firmware upgrades without notifying their customers. Even companies that support it (like Foscam) demand developer agreements be signed to get basic camera command information. Tp-link supports rstp but requires an phone app and Internet connection to configure their cameras.
Like you, I will never connect my cameras to the Internet, but we are slowly approaching a time when that by itself will be a cause for police investigation.

As they say in the South: “Thank god for Mississippi.”

I hope someone with the time will take a good look about what information is being sent.

Forces you to sign up using Chrome.English19·9 days agoI’ve been running across sites that demand I use Chrome on PC too, a non-starter since Google “upgraded” Chrome to prevent adblock use. My solution has been to install User Agent Switcher for Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/android/addon/uaswitcher/. Works on both PC and phone.

spaghettiwestern@sh.itjust.worksto Technology@lemmy.world•Is Washington state falling out of love with Tesla?English583·9 days agoBut many of the signs target Elon Musk specifically, and his most famous brand, Tesla, calling the vehicles “Swasticars” and comparing Musk to a Nazi.
Musk; “How many legacy media publications, talk shows, whatever, try to claim that I was a Nazi because of some random hand gesture gesture at a rally where all I said was that my heart goes out to you,”

Most left weeks earlier than planned this spring because they “feel unwelcome in the U.S.”. Some are selling their properties and others have vowed to not come back as long as the felon’s in office. The reports of ICE detaining international tourists for weeks has made them unwilling to cross the border. Those same people are avoiding U.S. products like the plague while in Canada.
The felon’s done damage that won’t be easily undone.

Before the felon’s tariffs truck traffic would be so dense it would take miles to get over to the right lane to exit the freeway. Now traffic’s way down to maybe 2/3 of what it was. The lack of container ships in West Coast ports has been well documented.
No matter what you think of the source, the big drop in freight traffic is real. CEOs of trucking companies should be seriously alarmed. Maybe even some Magats are questioning their choice in the last election.
spaghettiwestern@sh.itjust.worksto homeassistant@lemmy.world•Home Assistant Says Goodbye to 32-bit and Hacky Install MethodsEnglish4·10 days agoWhen I bought this laptop the cheap thin clients came with eMMC storage. Keyboard and display are convenient for installations, backups and occasionally other uses. A decent size UPS is more than $100, uses power even when it’s in standby and still doesn’t last anywhere near the 7+ hours of the laptop battery when the power fails. I’m away for 3-4 weeks at a time and have had repeated power failures completely corrupt my server SSD during that time. Not everyone can fix a server problem within a few hours.
The laptop cost significantly less than a thin client, plus a gpu, plus a UPS and came with that nice keyboard and display, and a warranty. It only uses about 6-8 watts the majority of the time, important to me for a device that’s always on.
Different people have different use cases than you do. Some of us even know what works best for us.
spaghettiwestern@sh.itjust.worksto homeassistant@lemmy.world•Home Assistant Says Goodbye to 32-bit and Hacky Install MethodsEnglish81·11 days agoDifferent people have different use cases. A thin client doesn’t work for video object recognition, nor does it come with a keyboard, display, SSD or battery backup.

spaghettiwestern@sh.itjust.worksto homeassistant@lemmy.world•Home Assistant Says Goodbye to 32-bit and Hacky Install MethodsEnglish3·11 days agoI’m aware it can still be run, but as I stated in my previous comment my platform and installation were specifically purchased and configured to be fully supported and I would like to keep it that way.
spaghettiwestern@sh.itjust.worksto homeassistant@lemmy.world•Home Assistant Says Goodbye to 32-bit and Hacky Install MethodsEnglish10·11 days agoThis is really disappointing. My HA Supervised install was running fine last year on an old laptop and unsupported distro. In order to move to a supported installation of HA I purchased a very efficient fanless laptop specifically sized to run Debian 12 and HA Supervised. This install has been rock solid and the opposite of “Hacky” (despite Howtogeek’s clickbait title), and I expected it to easily last 5+ years. It’s been 8 months.
Of course Home Assistant developers need to sometimes EOL specific configurations and dropping 32bit hardware support was overdue (the last 32 bit Raspberry Pi was released over 10 years ago), but 6 months is an absurdly short amount of notice to give users of supported configurations on supported hardware that they’re going to be forced to migrate to something else.
spaghettiwestern@sh.itjust.worksto Technology@lemmy.world•The technology to end traffic deaths exists. Why aren’t we using it?English32·11 days agoImpaired driving is also solvable. On-demand breathalyzers, smartphone saliva tests, and eye-tracking sensors are all tools that already exist to stop drunk and high drivers before they even start the ignition. Uber is already testing real-time driver sobriety verification. Why aren’t carmakers racing to put similar tech in every new vehicle?
There’s no fucking way people will buy those cars is why. I rarely drink and will never buy a car that required a saliva test or blowing into a tube before starting. Like it or not, any car that includes that equipment would be DOA and a financial disaster for the car manufacturer.
spaghettiwestern@sh.itjust.worksto Technology@lemmy.world•“How you design the beep is important.” Behind the movement for calmer gadgets.English3·11 days agoBad design goes both ways. I have a couple of small kitchen appliances (coffee machine & toaster oven) and their beeps are impossible to hear if there’s the slightest bit of background noise. It makes using them a PITA. And then there’s my microwave which could wake the dead.
And the felon is a definite leak.
