I’ve seen reports of this kind of scam before, and it’s fairly hard to defend against.
Unlike many scams, the scammers actually deliver what they are selling - the land. Of course they failed to mention it’s useless if you plan to develop anything, but that’s a lot harder to prove in court than a plain theft.

flamingo_pinyata@sopuli.xyzto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do words like 'conmunity', 'family', 'team', 'clan', 'society' 'country' etc still mean anything anymore, or are we devolving into individualistic people looking out for no 1?212·9 days agoNeither - the words you mentioned are usually employed by people wanting to take advantage of you.
Distancing from it is a self-preservation thing, and sometimes a moral thing. People don’t like being played, or doing bad things because someone told them it’s for family/clan/country/etc.
Soooo, did it work??
flamingo_pinyata@sopuli.xyzto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you live in a country where you think the laws are reasonably in line with what you think is just? Do the decisions of your courts usually meet your expectations in this respect?8·12 days agoTo go into some more details-
Good: Serious crimes are punished - I don’t expect anyone to get away with murder. There are no political crimes, you won’t get imprisoned for being against the government. Minimal religious influence on laws.
Bad: Small crimes like theft is are not treated consistently. Unlike some who call for harsher penalties I disagree. I think the penalties are appropriate but a lot of cases go ignored. If every case was processed even with a metaphorical slap on the wrist, there would basically be no theft.
To be seen: Command responsibility. Recently there was a case where a government official’s inaction during a natural disaster resulted in people dying. Some would have died anyway but it could have been minimized if they acted quickly. The trial is in progress, we’ll see what comes of it, but the laws exist.

There are some improvements that could be done, but I don’t think any fundamental reforms are needed.

For religious people - because Christianity allows only one spouse.
For non-religious it has a bad reputation due to the way it used to be practiced in the Arab world (and elsewhere) where it’s not symmetrical - a husband is allowed multiple wives but a wife is not allowed multiple husbands.Lately there has been a rise in acceptance of polyamory - understanding that people may have multiple partners at the same time, and this should be accepted.

flamingo_pinyata@sopuli.xyzto World News@lemmy.world•Salvadoran President Bukele proposes prisoner swap with Maduro for Venezuelan deporteesEnglish1·16 days agoI’ve long thought that Salvadorean prisoners should be considered POWs rather than criminals. Through that lense, the confinement of anyone with the enemy “uniform” (tattoos in this case) makes perfect sense. And exchange for other prisoners.
Bukele is just too dumb to understand his own actions. Or dislikes the Geneva convention which would apply if he framed it like that.
Every post on Lemmy has a couple of downvotes. Whether it’s haters, bots or accidental clicks, I don’t know. I suspect all 3.
