  • Honestly without knowing the context something like that actually would be easy to slip by. It’s absolutely simple to think of any campaign saying we need to find X votes in this region to win. Though usually we would just think they’re talking about actually winning votes and not just whipping them up out of thin air or disenfranchising others to get them.

And remember again. That wasn’t in the media very long at all. It was even more of a blip than anything related to January 6th. Republicans and fascists can keep a line in the public Consciousness for decades. Democrats can’t even stay focused on the truth and pushing it. For more than a month or two. Of course it’s really easy to perpetuate a message and control it when you control the media and Outlets that people get it from. So Democrats are always going to be at a disadvantage. Even if they did try.

Honestly I’m not sure what an actual good solution is to this problem. About the best I can think of right now is everyone should be friends with a good poli-size student when it comes to politics or someone involved in research science when it comes to science Etc. To help temper their understanding and cut through a lot of sensationalist b******* that gets put out there

  • It’s a problem of propaganda. All the mass media is owned by a few wealthy interests. A lot of people only get information from mass media. Media which regularly gave a seditious tractor like trump undue respect and deference for fear of 'losing access". When they don’t treat him with the disdain and animosity he rightly deserves. People question whether what he did was actually that unusual or even bad.

Yes they saw what happened January 6th, but most of the media doesn’t even bother to mention it much now. So it must not have been that big of a deal right? All a bunch of overblown hyperbole and bluster like Republicans accusations against Democrats. So they just “both sides” it all. Handwaving it away, thinking themselves above it and superior. Only bothering to latch on to talking points they like. Which only makes things worse seeing how bad Democrats are at playing the media compared to republicans.

  • The mass media, even so called lefty MSNBC which is center at best. Though usually pretty solid right. Didn’t cover it with the appropriate tone or seriousness it deserved. MSNBC did at least start out that way and tried before giving up. The rest of the media never did. And so there was 4 years of largely rehab to trumps image. The simple fact that he incited a coup wasn’t brought up much for fear of losing access.

And so, people started to question their own eyes. Question whether there was actually really a coup or not. If it was just being blown out of proportion like conservatives blow fluoride in the water out of proportion. If the popular media isn’t going to treat it like it’s serious why would the average consumer of popular media?

Hell so much of the media spent so much more time covering Republican false accusations of Democrats smuggling in immigrants to hurt America. Suddenly the truth became lies and lies became the truth.

And before you admonish and ridicule these people for not going to such and such website to get the truth etc. A lot of people don’t get their information and news online still. Relying on the completely captured 4th estate to report on and distill even news happening online down for them. And this is the power of control and propaganda. For a short while at least perception can be reality. We need to spend less time haranguing and attacking people who mistakenly voted for trump. Instead trying to find a way to disarm and defeat the captured fourth estate.

  • I’m not the one here trying to justify anything. That’s you. You’re the one here trying to pull off some ridiculous conspiracy theory where more than half the voting population are either mentally handicapped or evil in order to justify your 2 minutes hate.

Simply unwilling to acknowledge that the majority of people still get all their information from the mainstream media. The same mainstream media that we call out here on a daily basis for being tepid spineless and inaccurate in their coverage of everything including Palestine. The same mainstream media that has given Trump and Republicans far too much undue deference and respect. Propping them up. It’s not that you can’t understand the people who voted for Trump it’s that you don’t want to.

The fact that you could be on Reddit or Lemmy and claim that you are somehow not terminally online is especially hilarious. Being on either of those is absolutely terminally online. Brother we both are. You just lack the self-awareness. And that’s the problem.

  • Well the real key on that is to stop looking at it as us and them. Because they are us. When it really comes down to it they generally want the same thing. They just let themselves get distracted with culture war issues. Dehumanizing and othering people who aren’t them. Just as we are easily susceptible to stories media and Outlets that dehumanize and other them or tying them as the problem.

They think wealthy Democrats are to blame for all their problems. If we are being extremely generous they might be 10 to 25% correct. Whereas Democrats and many progressives feel it is wealthy Republicans that are to blame. Which again 75 to 80% correct. Which is just how the people who are the problems like it. Continuing to make it an US versus them thing. When the truth is it doesn’t matter what party they pretend to be in. It’s on the wallpapers that are the problem. And that’s something both Republican voters and everyone else can really agree when you get down to it. But that is what would really terrify the people who are the problem. If we were to unite against them.

Though as an anarchist that may just be my personal views.

  • Trump says vague shit all the time. Which that is a prime example of. He wasn’t specific. But he did not say it in a vacuum either. The mass media did a lot to sane wash it. To imply that it wasn’t as sweeping or horrific as it would actually be. And people believed them.

The mass media does not treat him as a fascistic man child narcissist. They shower him with undo respect and restraint. Thinking in some misguided Nevil Chamberlain sense, that appeasement will save them. Though to be fair plenty of them feel like they are in on it as well.

To deny that this is the case, that mass media has not failed us, that their failings to be informed are all on them and no one else. Is to dismiss them with the same touch that conservatives dismiss the poor the underserved and minorities. Simply by assuming they all have the exact same access and opportunity that we do. They don’t. Don’t be like conservatives and fascists. Yes people absolutely do need to do more to educate themselves. But we absolutely need to make it clear and easier to find proper sources to do that from and encourage them to do that.

When you make assumptions based on your personal experience you’ve already lost the debate.
